Phi Robotics Research

During my internship at Phi Robotics Research from October to December 2022, I contributed to robotics product development, honed my project management skills, and solved real-world technical challenges. Splitting my time between weekly visits to the Mumbai office and remote work, I gained invaluable hands-on experience in designing and executing innovative projects in robotics.


A Transformative Internship Experience


From October to December 2022, I embarked on an exhilarating journey as an intern at Phi Robotics Research, a company dedicated to creating innovative robotics solutions. This opportunity proved to be a perfect blend of challenge, learning, and growth. It allowed me to immerse myself in a technical environment where I could contribute meaningfully to cutting-edge robotics projects. Working closely with a team of experienced engineers and researchers, I gained insights into the intricacies of robotics development, problem-solving in real-world scenarios, and managing the balance between on-site and remote work.



The First Steps: Adapting to a New Environment


Joining Phi Robotics Research felt like stepping into a new world where creativity and technology converged. I was immediately drawn to the collaborative atmosphere that encouraged open dialogue and innovation. My role primarily involved assisting in the development of robotics products, contributing to both design and project execution. As someone passionate about technology, I was excited by the opportunity to work on projects that had the potential to shape the future.


Although I was based in Pune, my internship required me to visit the company's office in Mumbai once a week. These weekly visits were both challenging and rewarding. Traveling to Mumbai exposed me to a fast-paced corporate culture and gave me the chance to engage directly with my mentors and peers. The hands-on experience I gained during these visits was invaluable, as it allowed me to collaborate effectively and learn from seasoned professionals in the field.


On the other days, I worked remotely, which brought its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. Remote work demanded self-discipline, effective communication, and a keen sense of responsibility. I quickly realised the importance of time management and proactive engagement to ensure that my tasks aligned with the project's overall progress.



Contributing to Robotics Product Development


One of the most exciting aspects of my internship was contributing to the design and execution of robotics products. The projects I worked on were not just theoretical but had tangible goals and real-world applications. My tasks included assisting with the design of robotic components, testing prototypes, and providing feedback to improve functionality.


Every day brought a new challenge, whether it was troubleshooting a technical issue, brainstorming innovative solutions, or ensuring that the project timelines were met. These experiences enhanced my understanding of how theoretical knowledge translates into practical applications, especially in the context of robotics.


Building Practical Problem-Solving Skills


Working in a real-world technical environment sharpened my problem-solving skills. Robotics projects often involve complex systems where mechanical, electronic, and software components must work seamlessly together. I learned how to approach problems methodically, breaking them down into manageable parts and collaborating with the team to develop solutions.


One memorable instance was troubleshooting a robotic arm prototype that was not responding to commands as expected. Diagnosing the issue required analysing multiple factors, including hardware connections, sensor data, and software code. By systematically eliminating potential causes and consulting with my mentors, we identified a calibration error in the sensors. Fixing this issue was a rewarding experience, as it underscored the importance of attention to detail and persistence.


Balancing On-Site and Remote Work


The hybrid nature of my internship, combining weekly visits to Mumbai with remote work, taught me valuable lessons about adaptability and communication. On-site days were intensive, packed with meetings, brainstorming sessions, and hands-on work with prototypes. These interactions helped me build rapport with my team and gain insights into the company’s broader objectives.


In contrast, remote work days required me to take greater initiative and ensure that I stayed aligned with the team’s goals. Regular virtual meetings and updates were crucial for maintaining productivity and staying connected. This experience has made me more confident in my ability to work effectively in hybrid or remote settings, a skill that is increasingly important in today’s professional landscape.


Lessons Learned


My internship at Phi Robotics Research was a transformative experience that left a lasting impact on my personal and professional growth. Some of the key lessons I learned include:


  1. Collaboration is Key: Working with a diverse team of professionals taught me the value of collaboration and the importance of leveraging different perspectives to solve complex problems.


  2. Adaptability and Time Management: Balancing on-site and remote work helped me develop a structured approach to managing tasks and deadlines.


  3. Attention to Detail: In robotics, even minor errors can have significant consequences. I learned to approach tasks with precision and thoroughness.


  4. Real-World Problem Solving: Facing and overcoming challenges in a real-world technical environment honed my analytical and critical thinking skills.


Looking Ahead


My time at Phi Robotics Research has deepened my passion for technology and innovation. It has also reinforced my belief in the importance of hands-on experience in bridging the gap between theory and practice. The skills I gained during this internship have laid a strong foundation for my future endeavours in robotics and engineering.


As I reflect on this experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects and learn from some of the brightest minds in the field. Phi Robotics Research provided me with a platform to grow, challenge myself, and gain insights that will guide me in my academic and professional journey.
