Retreat at Pack Forest

This week, I had the privilege of participating in the Unite UW cultural exchange program’s highlight event—the retreat at Pack Forest.

The journey began at 5:30 PM, we boarded a bus, buzzing with excitement. By the time we reached Pack Forest, night had fallen, wrapping the place in an air of mystery and anticipation. Our first stop was a big, old building called Pack Hall. With its roaring fireplace and warm ambiance, it felt like a scene from a storybook. Cozy doesn’t even begin to describe it—Pack Hall was the perfect place to begin this adventure.

After some time spent settling in, we headed to our assigned cabins. They were spacious and welcoming, radiating a rustic charm that felt like a warm embrace. Once unpacked, we regrouped at Scott Hall, where the night unfolded with an array of board games and camaraderie. The laughter and chatter filled the air, breaking down barriers and bringing us closer together.

The next morning started with an amazing breakfast in the dining hall, the aroma of fresh food mingling with the crisp forest air. This hearty meal set the stage for what became one of the most memorable days of my life. We began with rounds of heartfelt discussions, sitting in circles where people shared their most vulnerable stories. Listening to these stories, I felt a deep sense of empathy and connection—it was as though the walls between us dissolved, leaving only raw humanity behind. It was a reminder that, no matter where we come from, we all carry emotions, struggles, and dreams.

Between these profound moments, we engaged in lively activities. There was a spirited game of tug-of-war, where laughter and teamwork reigned supreme, and a massive battle of rock-paper-scissors that had everyone cheering and strategizing with unexpected intensity. These activities brought out a playful side in all of us, balancing the deeper discussions with lighthearted fun.

One of the most unforgettable parts of the retreat for me was discovering a game called Mancala. I ended up playing it all night, captivated by its simplicity and strategy. It’s a game that I’ll cherish not only for the fun but also for the memories of the people I played it with, their smiles and laughter etched in my mind.

Another highlight was creating a skit based on the film Inside Out and performing it for the group. This was followed by a talent show where I was gently (or not-so-gently) coerced into singing “Mundian To Bach Ke.” While I initially hesitated, the overwhelming support and encouragement from everyone made it an experience I’ll always treasure.

Throughout the retreat, Pack Hall remained a gathering place. Whether it was sipping hot chocolate by the fire or sharing my favourite Indian snacks with friends, it was a space where connections deepened. The joy of introducing others to the flavours of home was something special—a small way of sharing my culture with the world.

As the retreat came to a close, I left Pack Forest with a heart full of gratitude. The stories I heard, the friendships I formed, and the laughter we shared will stay with me forever. Unite UW and this retreat reminded me of the beauty of diversity and the strength of human connection.
