My discovery of Mirza Ghalib came during one of the most introspective periods of my life—the 2021 second wave of COVID-19. With the world in shutdown, I found myself with an abundance of time to explore interests that often eluded my busy schedule. It was during this time that I delved into the works of Mirza Ghalib, a poet whose words are timeless and whose thoughts remain as profound today as they were in 19th-century India.
I stumbled upon Ghalib’s legacy through the Jashn-e-Rekhta YouTube channel. Their rich collection of videos introduced me to his ghazals, his wit, and his unparalleled ability to articulate the human experience. I spent hours watching performances, discussions, and recitations, falling deeper into the world of Ghalib’s Urdu poetry. His words, layered with meaning, seemed to resonate with the isolation and introspection that defined that period of my life.

Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, known as Mirza Ghalib, was born on December 27, 1797, in Agra. His life was marked by both brilliance and adversity. Orphaned at a young age, Ghalib moved to Delhi, where he began his literary journey. He is often regarded as one of the greatest poets in the Urdu and Persian languages, celebrated for his mastery of the ghazal—a poetic form characterized by its brevity and emotional depth.
Ghalib’s life coincided with a tumultuous period in Indian history, including the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of British colonial rule. These upheavals influenced his work, imbuing it with themes of loss, existentialism, and the quest for meaning. His personal life was no less challenging. He endured financial difficulties, the loss of seven children, and a lifelong struggle for patronage and recognition. Despite these hardships, Ghalib’s wit and philosophical outlook shone through his poetry, earning him a devoted following.
Ghalib’s contributions extend beyond poetry. His letters, written in a conversational style, provide a vivid account of his era and reveal his sharp intellect and humour. His works continue to inspire generations, transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries.
Months later, when my "Ghalib phase" had cooled, serendipity struck. During an after-school trip to Crossword in Camp(An area of Pune). I stumbled upon a large hardcover book on Ghalib. It was exquisite: beautiful fonts, breathtaking page design, and, to my delight, a foreword by Khushwant Singh. However, the book came with a steep price tag. After some hard bargaining with my mother, I convinced her to buy it, and it became one of my most cherished possessions.
Ghalib’s work is vast, intricate, and, at first glance, daunting. His command of language and depth of thought can feel intimidating, but as I began to slowly grasp the essence of a few ghazals, I realized that understanding Ghalib is a journey rather than a destination. To quote him effortlessly, as some do, remains an aspiration for me, but one I know will take years of immersion and reflection.
Another highlight of my Ghalib exploration was watching the Doordarshan series on his life, featuring Naseeruddin Shah—my favourite actor—in the titular role. Shah’s portrayal brought Ghalib to life in a way that no book or recitation could, blending the poet’s genius with his humanity. The show painted a vivid picture of Ghalib’s struggles, humour, and unyielding spirit.
Looking back, my introduction to Ghalib during those uncertain times feels almost poetic in itself. His words, rich with longing, introspection, and an unrelenting quest for understanding, mirrored my own state of mind. Ghalib is a companion for those who seek solace and beauty in words. His poetry continues to inspire readers, offering new meanings with every reading and every stage of life.
While I may not yet quote him with ease, I carry his verses in my heart, knowing they will accompany me for a lifetime. Ghalib’s genius lies not just in his words but in his ability to connect deeply with the human soul—an ability that ensures his immortality in the annals of literature.
