Anand

Anand (1971) is a timeless classic that masterfully blends joy and sorrow. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the film follows the poignant journey of Anand Sehgal, a terminally ill but infectiously cheerful man, and his friendship with Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee. With unforgettable performances by Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, Anand celebrates the philosophy of embracing life, no matter how fleeting, while leaving a deep emotional impact.

Anand

I first watched Anand during the pandemic, a period of immense uncertainty and introspection. From the very first watch, I was completely captivated. This film’s philosophy of living a meaningful life rather than a long one resonated deeply with me. The unforgettable line, "Zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahi", has become a mantra I carry with me in my daily life.

Rajesh Khanna’s performance as Anand Sehgal is pure brilliance. His infectious optimism and fearless embrace of mortality brought the character to life in a way few actors could. His humour, charm, and profound insights make Anand unforgettable, balancing lightheartedness with deep emotional weight.

Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee complements Khanna’s Anand perfectly. As the reserved, serious doctor, his struggle to reconcile with Anand’s impending death is deeply moving. This role, long before Bachchan’s superstardom, showcased his incredible range and subtlety as an actor.

The music of Anand is another masterpiece. Songs like Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye and Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli are not just melodies but emotional experiences. I’ve listened to these tracks countless times, finding new depth in their lyrics with every play.

Above all, this film has profoundly influenced my life. Anand’s love for Urdu poetry awakened my own passion for the language, ultimately guiding me to pursue Urdu at the University of Washington. The beauty of his words and the way he wove them into life’s philosophy left an indelible mark on me.

Anand is more than a film—it’s a timeless ode to life. It reminds us to live fully, love deeply, and create moments that linger in the hearts of others. Every rewatch reinforces its lessons, making it an irreplaceable part of my life’s journey.
