Hello! Delighted to have you here

Navjot

Sat Sri Akal! I’m Navjot Singh Grewal, a student at the University of Washington, Seattle, intending to pursue a major in mathematics.

I’ve always found it rather challenging to pinpoint my favourite subjects due to my eclectic interests. My fervour for mathematics is nearly matched by my enthusiasm for literature, cinema, linguistics, history, philosophy, and music, to name but a few. I delight in immersing myself in these diverse fields and remain endlessly fascinated by the breadth of academic knowledge. For instance, I have a particular penchant for Russian literature; Tolstoy and Dostoevsky never fail to captivate me. Most of my leisure time is devoted to exploring mathematics, reading literature, playing tennis or cricket, and learning a new language.

A significant part of my life revolves around mathematics, and I am deeply honoured to have been selected for the esteemed Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Attending this programme as an 11th-grade student in 2023 was a remarkable experience, and I was grateful to receive the Tara and Jasubhai Mehta Fellowship for this opportunity.

The programme was intellectually stimulating, especially in the realm of number theory. The problem sets were meticulously designed to encourage us to analyse problems, formulate conjectures, and either prove, disprove, or refine them. The exhilaration of making discoveries and experiencing those epiphanies was truly unparalleled.

Additionally, the programme afforded me the chance to delve deeply into Pick’s formula and Euler’s theorem through the first-year Exploration Labs, which culminated in an expository write-up. The advanced course on number theory, led by Professor Ila Varma, along with its comprehensive problem sets, was exceptionally illuminating and provided profound insights into the subject.

Do take a moment to explore my world of varied interests. Browse the Books section to discover my literary book selections and cherished mathematical texts. Finally, delve into the My Blogs section for my musings, including why George Harrison is my favourite Beatle and which Battle of Panipat holds the most significance for me.
